Bernieth E. King, nee Martin, of Hillsboro, MO and formerly of Cherryville, MO was born on Friday, June 10, 1938 in Cherryville, MO to James Harrison Martin and Sarah “Lou” Martin, nee Oxendine. She passed away at her home on Sunday, August 14, 2022 at the age of 84 years, 2 months and 4 days.
Bernieth was raised in Cherryville, MO and attended Cherryville school. At the age of 14 she met the love of her life, Arthur Ruben King. They were married on October 31, 1953 in Steelville, MO and to this union four children were born. Bernieth was a member of Rose of Sharon Full Gospel in De Soto, MO. She was a homemaker and farm girl. She liked gardening, flowers, canning, baking, making pies and was very active in her church. She was very crafty, enjoyed sewing and crocheting. Most of all, Bernieth loved her family and spending time with them, especially her grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents James and Lou Martin; parents-in-law Ruben and Mable King; husband Arthur Ruben King; siblings Ollie (Garrett) Halbert, Clint (Martha) Martin, Kenneth (Martha) Martin, Dwight (Mary) Martin, James Madison "Putter" (Ruthie) Martin, Ed (Marie) Martin, Lillie (John) Simpson; brothers-in-law Walter King, Jerry King, Edmond Adams, Robert Hutson, Lester Vance and Clifton Harmon; sister-in-law Rachel Adams; son-in-law Kevin Skaggs and granddaughter Missi Hicks.
Bernieth is survived by her children Elsie (Pete) Hammond and Nancy Skaggs both of De Soto, MO, Judy (Rick) Brown and Dale (Dawn) King both of Hillsboro, MO; sister Lucille Harmon of Steelville, MO; sisters-in-law Geraldine King of Berryman, MO, Margie King of Cuba, MO, Lottie Vance and Mary Hutson both of Steelville, MO; eight grandchildren Dawn (Matt) Selsor, Zeb (Annie) Hammond, Koty Hammond (Brittany Burns), Ricky (Shelly) Brown, Jared (Codi) King, Jordan (Kenzie) King, Brandon Skaggs and Shannon Skaggs; five great grandchildren Makayla Brown, Kevin Sanders, Lo Hammond, Mac Hammond and Colter Hammond; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
​Visitation was from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville, MO. Funeral immediately followed at 1:00 PM with Bro. Carl McKalip and Bro. Sam Weber officiating. Burial was at Berryman Cemetery, Berryman, MO. Memorials were suggested to Berryman Cemetery.
