Carroll Gene Skaggs

Carroll Gene Skaggs of Cuba, MO, formerly of Bourbon, MO, was born on Wednesday, April 5, 1933, in Bonne Terre, MO to William Frank Skaggs and Altha Skaggs, nee Whitehead.  He passed away at Cuba Manor on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the age of 91 years, 9 months and 7 days.

Carroll grew up in Desloge, MO and graduated from Desloge High School.  Carroll accepted the Lord at a young age and attended Desloge Baptist Church. He married the love of his life, Margaret Florence Pauline Valley on April 16, 1956 in Bonne Terre, MO and to this union 4 children were born. 

After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany.  After serving honorably for four years, Carroll returned to the states, moved to Herculaneum to work in the mines for approximately 8 years. He and his wife then moved to Sullivan, MO where he worked for 28 years as a machine operator at Meramec Group. They retired to Bourbon, MO and lived there for several years. Carroll was known as a hard worker, and he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Carroll was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Skaggs of 47 years; parents William and Altha Skaggs; brothers Glenwood Skaggs and Harold Skaggs; sisters Beulah Coffman, Marie Pryor and June Pittman; brothers-in-law Lewis Valley, Andrew Valley, Marvin Valley and Phillip Stotler; sisters-in-law Esther Curtis, Nadine Hodges, Dorothy Walker, Irene Reed, Bermida Sweeney, Audrey Cortor, and Betty Howard; and son-in-law Roy Schroeder.

He is survived by his children Carroll “Joe” (wife Angela) Skaggs of Leasburg, MO, Esther Schroeder of Bland, MO, Carl Ray Skaggs, and Ronnie Dean Skaggs both of Bourbon, MO; brothers-in-law Don Pittman of Madrid, OK and Melvin (wife Jane) Valley of AZ; 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation was from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, MO. Funeral Service immediately followed at 12:00 pm with Dr. Rick Haggett officiating.  A private burial was at IOOF Cemetery in Sullivan, MO.
