Charles "Chuck" Avery Obituary

Charles "Chuck" Coleman Avery, of Bourbon, MO, was born on Thursday, August 23, 1951, in St. Louis, MO to Woodrow Avery and Martha Zora Avery, nee Lilly.  He passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024, at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan, MO at the age of 72 years, 7 months, and 9 days.

Chuck attended and graduated from Bourbon High School in 1970.  He enlisted in the United States Navy where he served on the USS Franklin D Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier during Vietnam.  He was honorably discharged after serving for four years. He then enlisted in the United States Army where he served honorably for eighteen years until he retired in 1992.  He married the love of his life, Sharon Lee Bourgault on November 25, 1978, in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and three daughters were born to this union. After retiring from the service, Chuck began his second career with the Department of Corrections where he worked for 18 years until his retirement in 2009. During their marriage, Chuck and Sharon had lived in Cuba, MO for 23 years before moving in 2015 to their present home in Bourbon, MO.

Chuck loved fishing, hunting, and playing softball pickup games.  He also enjoyed reading, especially Westerns by Louis L’Amour, watching westerns on TV, bowling, stargazing with his girls, and growing tomatoes.  Chuck loved his children and had always wanted to be a dad since he was young.  He enjoyed being at home and with the family.  He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents Woodrow and Martha Avery; siblings Ralph Stone, James Stone, and Jo Ellen (Frank, III.) Wevers; daughter Shiloh Lorraine Avery; brother-in-law James Gilbert; and nephew Donald Austin Avery, Jr.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sharon Avery, of Bourbon, MO; children Shawna Renee Avery and Charyl Virginia Lily Avery both of Bourbon, MO; parents-in-law Raymond and Rose Bourgault of Barefoot Bay, FL; siblings James Avery and Sharon Gilbert both of Colorado Springs, CO, Donald Avery of Leasburg, MO and Marilyn (Ronald) Woyak of MI; sisters-in-law Mary Lou Stone of Columbia, IL, Cynthia Mihalick of Barefoot Bay, FL, and Sharon Stone of CA; brother-in-law Dennis (Mary) Bourgault of Southwick, MA; grandchildren Aubrey Mehas, Axton Mehas and Amara Mehas all of Bourbon, MO; nieces Tina (Jeremy) Bond of Potosi, MO and Jamie (David) Salcedo of CA; special best friends Bruce (Julie) King, Paul (Debbie) Ransom all of Leasburg, MO and Timothy (Gaynell) Lomax of St. Clair, MO; other relatives and friends.

Visitation is from 5:00PM - 6:00PM on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba, MO.  Memorial Service will immediately follow at 6:00PM with Bro. Bruce King and Bro. Paul Ransom officiating.  Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project (P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516) or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (4550 Montgomery Ave., Suite 1100 N, Bethesda, MD 20814). Following Chuck's wishes, the family chose cremation as his final disposition.
