Deanna Jo Spurgeon, nee Wright, of Cuba, MO was born on Tuesday, September 13, 1938 in Moberly, MO to Earl Mason Wright and Dolores Kathleen Wright, nee O'Bryan. She passed away at her home on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at the age of 84 years, 3 months and 18 days.
Deanna graduated from Brunswick High School, then attended Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. At 19 years old, she married the love of her life, Keith Edward Spurgeon on June 1, 1958 in Brunswick, MO and to this union 5 children were born. Deanna taught for 34 years, working for Cuba, Sullivan, St. James and Richmond School Districts teaching music, kindergarten, 6th grade, middle school and high school. Deanna had accepted the Lord as her personal Savior, was a member of First Baptist Church in Cuba, MO and later attended Trinity Chapel. Music was a big part of Deanna’s life, she was the pianist at both First Baptist and Trinity Chapel, was the Director of the Sullivan Community Choir and enjoyed going to The Muny and musicals. Deanna was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority where she earned the Order of the Pearl award for 65 years of membership, Three Mile Extension Club and the Friday Lunch Bunch. She enjoyed traveling with Keith, her parents and her children. They had visited Alaska, made many trips to Phoenix, AZ, took a family trip to the Royal Gorge, enjoyed camping at Blue Hole and went to Mexico. She loved to fish, work in the greenhouse when she was able and loved Cheez-its. Deanna loved sports, was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed watching Mizzou football and basketball. She especially enjoyed watching her grandkids play. Most of all, Deanna loved her family and spending time with them. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents Earl and Dolores Wright; parents-in-law Ralph Sr. and Elsie Spurgeon; brother Jack Wright; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Ralph Jr. (wife Rita Grace) Spurgeon, Robert Spurgeon, Kenneth (wife Judy) Spurgeon and Betty Spurgeon.
Deanna is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Keith Spurgeon of Cuba, MO; children Cynthia Spurgeon, Kevin (wife Dana) Spurgeon, Melanie (husband Jerry) Montgomery, Brad Spurgeon and Dana (husband Rick) Pilkenton all of Cuba, MO; 19 grandchildren, Mason (wife Carrie) Spurgeon of Fayette, MO, Beverly (husband Josh) Englert of Washington, KS, Jennifer (husband Justin) Eaton of Cherryville, MO, Carrie Romine of Columbia, MO, Kaitlin (husband Cody) DeMint of Cairo, MO, Kelli (husband Adam) D'Angelo of Morrowville, KS, Weston Romine (fiancee Libby) of Watford City, ND, Bryce Romine (fiancee Victoria) of Punta Gorda, FL, Walker Romine of Washington, KS, Riley Spurgeon and Justin (wife Kasie) Bayless both of Cuba, MO, Jerrid (wife Jennifer) Bayless of Pleasant Hill, MO, Jorden Howard of Cuba, MO, Callie (husband Collier) Nichols of Jefferson City, MO, Morgan Pilkenton and Harley Pilkenton both of Cuba, MO, Katy (husband Tito) Soto of NC, Hannah (husband Garrett) Cardoza of San Diego, CA and Summer Pilkenton of Rolla, MO; 20 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Linda Spurgeon of Macon, MO and Carolyn Wright of Liberty, MO; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation was from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, MO. Funeral Service was at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, MO with Pastor Cody DeMint officiating. Burial was at Bowen Cemetery, Bland, MO. Memorials were suggested to Bowen Cemetery (Bowen Cemetery Association c/o Stacy Johns 22357 State Route B, St. James, MO 65559).
