Obituary

Dorothy Mae Abney, nee Reeves, of Cuba, MO was born on Tuesday, February 25, 1936, in Steelville, MO to Wiley Samuel Reeves and Countis Mae Reeves, nee Mizell.  She passed away on Monday, June 12, 2023, at the age of 87 years, 3 months, and 18 days.

As a child, Dorothy had responsibilities too great for a kid, but she liked playing with her cousins.  She attended Yeary School and had to occasionally carry her brother and sister along with her.  She maintained that strength and stamina throughout her life. She married Amos Edgar Abney in Farmington, MO on June 3, 1952, and to this union 4 children were born. She lost Amos 4 years later in a car accident and raised her children on her own.  To support her family, Dorothy worked at Midway Restaurant as a cook, cleaned houses for several people, worked at Cuba Shoe Factory, Meramec Electric company, and then G & W Heel Lift until her retirement.

She loved her Thanksgiving holiday and put on a feast for the family.  Even though there would be as many as 28 people in her small home, there was always room for one more.  She also enjoyed her gatherings of the sisters’ birthday parties throughout the year.  Dorothy planted large gardens and canned her produce.  She loved spending time with her grandchildren, taking care of them when young. She had fun with her good friend, Daphne Ramori, going to yard sales, never knowing where they might wind up.  Dorothy introduced her grandsons to “yard saling” and they found many treasures together.

She accepted the Lord early in life, was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and later First Baptist Church of Cuba.  She lived a Christian life with pride and dignity and provided a strong moral compass for her children.  Her faith and belief in God helped her through much strife during her lifetime. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents Wiley and Countis Reeves; husband Amos Edgar Abney; son Vernon Ray Abney; brother Jewell Myers; parents-in-law Charlie and Lucy Abney; son-in-law Jim Young; brother-in-law Earl Garms; niece Betsey Young; grandson Russell Dorf, and nephews Paul Young and David Whaley.

She is survived by her daughters Doris (Carl) Hudson of Webb City, MO, Carole Abney of Torrence, CA and Geneva Young of Steelville, MO; sisters Mabel (Joe) Swink of Farmington, MO, Rosemary (Jim) Huck of Rolla, MO, Georgia Garms, Alice Whaley and Eula (Lee) Young all of Steelville, MO; grandchildren Christopher Dorf of Camdenton, MO, Ethan Schraml of Miller, MO, Les Young of Cuba, MO, William “Billy” DeWeese of Union, MO, William “Bart” Gregory of Ashland, MO, and Jesse Gilliam of Steelville, MO; 5 great grandchildren; special great great grandchild Landon Dorf; special "just like a son" Lee (Lynn) Swartz of Eastleigh, England; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
