Jerry King Obituary

Jerry C. King of Steelville, MO was born on Sunday, February 22, 1925, in Steelville, MO to Ruben Franklin King and Mabel Lola Bridgeman King.  He passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021 at the age of 96 years, 9 months, and 18 days.

Jerry grew up in the Steelville area and assisted his parents in the operation of a 500 acre farm during his younger years. He then served his country honorably in the United States Army during World War II. He married the love of his life Geraldine Hutchings on October 5, 1948 at the Steelville Courthouse.  They celebrated 73 years of marriage this past fall.  They did not have children of their own, however, they raised three boys and called them sons, Sonny Hutchings, Rick Hutchings, and Terry Tittsworth.  Their home was always filled with children.

They moved to Iowa in 1955 and lived there for 3 ½ years before moving to Caledonia, Minnesota and spending 30 years there. While there, Jerry helped set up two saw mills, including a stave mill.  In 1990, they moved back to Missouri and settled on the farm in Berryman where they’ve lived for the last 30 plus years.  He loved hunting and fishing when he wasn’t working and was always helping others. He was a hard worker (even still cutting logs at 94 years old) and a good mechanic.  As he had considerable ingenuity in repairing and solving mechanical issues, his friends and neighbors would leave their chain saws on his front porch with a note asking him to fix. He would always do so and leave their equipment in the same spot to pick up.  He also had a reputation for integrity in his business dealings.  His family told of a time when he had taken them to pick up a part.  After leaving and driving more than 20 miles, he realized he had shorted the seller by 1 cent. He turned around and drove back to pay his penny. He loved his family and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ruben and Mabel King; parents-in-law Gentry and Trula Hutchings; brothers infant Delmar King, Arthur King and Walter King; sister Rachel (Charles) Adams; brothers-in-law Lester Vance, Robert Hutson, Darrell Evans, and Rick Hutchings; sisters-in-law Sybil (James) Ogrzewalla, Charlene (Junior) Amberge, Wanda Hawkins, and Patricia (Odell) Evans.

Jerry  is survived by his loving wife Geraldine King of Steelville, MO; sisters Lottie Vance  and Mary Hutson both of Steelville, MO; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Margie King and Karen Hutchings both of Cuba, MO, Bernice King of Hillsboro, MO, Jestine Evans of Effingham, IL, Sonny (Mary) Hutchings of Steelville, MO, Betty (Curt) Lefler of Berryman, MO, Donna Tittsworth and Edward “June Bug” (Sandra) Robertson all of Steelville, MO; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
