John Peterson Obituary

John Anslem Peterson of Bourbon, MO was born on Wednesday, September 12, 1928 in Bourbon, MO to John Peterson and Frances Blum Peterson.  He passed away at his home on Sunday, October 25. 2020 at the age of 92 years, 1 month and 13 days.

John married Vera Madeline Wisehart on September 22, 1947 at St. Jacobi Lutheran Church in Jennings, MO and to this union four children were born.  John was a loyal member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Bourbon, MO for many years where he served the Lord in many ways such as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, elder and church council member.  He worked for Max Reichenberg for several years as a truck driver until October of 1952 when he began his lifelong career with the Missouri Highway Department (MODOT) and worked until January of 1992.  John was a whiz at math and helped design many of the local highways and bridges.  He had helped his mother Frances in her restaurant, the Cottage Inn, and loved to cook.  John was a hardworking man who was always telling jokes.  In his earlier years, he loved to dance and play games.  Later he enjoyed raising cattle, playing cards, gardening, watching the St. Louis Cardinals and playing a good game of checkers.  John loved his family the most, and he especially loved children.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. 

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Frances Peterson; parents-in-law Arthur and Elsie Wisehart; wife of 65 years Vera Peterson; brothers Robert and James Peterson; sister-in-law Dorothy (Ray) Hubert; grandson Terry James Peterson, Jr.; grandson-in-law Joshua Schoenhoff and great granddaughter Mariska Witt.

He is survived by his  children Michael Peterson of Bourbon, MO, Gary (Bonnie) Peterson of Bourbon, MO, Terry (Lisa) Peterson of Cuba, MO and Diane Peterson of Bourbon, MO; 13 grandchildren: Heather Youngblood of Kansas City, MO, Timothy Peterson of Wentzville, MO, Chris (Kim) Peterson, Jessica Schoenhoff and Megan Turnbough all of Sullivan, MO, Lucy Wilson and Samantha Wilson both of Cuba, MO, Sarah (Jeff) Lappe and Hope (Claude) Ripley both of Bourbon, MO, Alyssa Crabtree, Asha Peterson and Brianna Witt all of St. Clair, MO and Stephanie (Thomas) Carr of AR; 12 great grandchildren Abigail, Isabel and Cooper Peterson, Dustin, Tyler and Bryce Lappe, Alivia McKnight, Kaylee and Kameron Schoenhoff, Jonathon and Alexa Peterson and Gabriel Peterson; sister-in-law Pat Peterson of NH; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation was from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, MO.  Funeral Service immediately followed with Pastor John Roach officiating.  Burial was at Bourbon Cemetery.  Memorials were suggested to Concordia Lutheran Church (642 E Pine St, Bourbon, MO 65441).
