Lawrence "Larry" Edward Mullen of Iberia, Missouri was born on December 19, 1950, in Salem, Missouri to Lawrence Ed Mullen and Alma "Gene" Mullen, nee Laney. He passed away at his residence on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 5 days.
Due to his father being in the military, Larry grew up in Germany and Hawaii and also lived in many different parts of the country. He graduated from high school in Leilehua, Hawaii in 1969. He received a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Missouri – Columbia in 1974. While at Mizzou, he met and married Anita Kozanecki and to this union one son was born.
He moved school districts during the first few years of his career and met his second wife of 21 years, Karen Strosneider, while teaching in Mountain Grove. MO. They moved to Iberia in 1986 and he taught English and Literature in the Iberia R-5 School District until his retirement in 2004. He was a speech and drama coach which involved putting on plays and training for and attending speech contests. He was instrumental in writing many grants for school computers and other equipment. He loved Bluegrass music and attended many festivals. He wrote numerous articles and became a music critic. He also was an avid photographer and loved taking pictures of nature. He played the banjo for fun and enjoyed camping and canoeing with his son. He was certified by the Missouri Department of Conservation as a Hunter Safety Training Instructor and was also a Navy certified open sea diver instructor. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Colonel Ed and Alma "Gene" Mullen and brother-in-law Robert Norris.
Larry is survived by his son Edward “Ed” Vaughn Mullen and special friend Debbie Evans of Springfield, MO; sister Terry Norris of Ballwin, MO; brothers Robert (Bonnie) W.G. Mullen of Columbia, MO and John of West Virginia; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation was Thursday, September 1, 2022, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, MO. Funeral Service immediately followed at 1:00 PM with Rev. Spencer R. Hutson officiating. Burial was at Lick Creek Cemetery, Cuba, MO.
