Lonnie J. Cape, nee Elsberry, of Cuba, MO, was born on Friday, July 9, 1943 in Moberly, MO, to James Donald Elsberry and Fay Elsberry, nee Kirgen. She passed away at Mercy Hospital in Washington, MO on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 28 days.
Lonnie grew up in Vandalia, MO and graduated from Van-Far High School in the Class of 1961. She then attended business school at Gem City College in Quincy, IL. In 1980, Lonnie moved to Kansas, where she worked for Security Benefit Insurance Co. in Topeka, KS. She met the love of her life, Jerry J. Cape, in 1985; they were married on December 6, 1986 in Holton, KS and together blended their families and loved each other’s children as their own. Lonnie and Jerry moved to Cuba in 1989, where she worked at Jim's Motors as a secretary and then went to Rolla Regional Center until her retirement in 2008. Lonnie accepted the Lord early in life and attended Living Word Church in Leasburg, MO. She was very active in church and made desserts every week. Lonnie enjoyed traveling, going to Branson, MO, attending Southern Gospel Singings and to the National Quartet Conventions. She and Jerry also enjoyed going out to eat and finding new places to go. Lonnie was an immaculate housekeeper, loved to dress up and always looked her best. She loved decorating for every holiday and wearing her holiday sweaters. Most of all, Lonnie loved her family and spending time with them. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Fay Elsberry; parents-in-law, James and Margaret Cape; daughter Karren (David) Hill; brother-in-law James "Jim" (Darlene) Cape.
Lonnie is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Jerry J. Cape of Cuba, MO; children, Dr. Darren (DeeAnn) Heaton of Cuba, MO, Marsha (Charlie) Light of Rolla, MO, Michael (Julia) Cape of Rolla, MO, Pat (Dan) Doyle of Holton, KS and Ed Cape of Auburn, KS; grandchildren, Hannah (Cody) Shaw of Vichy, MO and Tyler (Haley) Heaton of Kansas City, MO, Summer (Paul) Stoner, Nicole (James) Bell, Michael (Jeryl) Light, Joshua Cape, Stephan (Ashley) Copple, Andrew Copple, Nathan (Katie) Doyle, Caleb (Brooke) Doyle, Ben (Sara) Doyle, Morgan Cape and Audrey Cape; great grandson Wyatt Shaw and 25 others; 9 great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Visitation was from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Living Word Church, Leasburg, MO. Funeral Service immediately followed at 12:00 PM with Pastors Dan Morrison and Jimmy Delacourt officiating. Burial was at Meramec Hills Cemetery, Cuba, MO. Memorials were suggested to Equipping the Harvest Ministries (P.O. Box 266, Potosi, MO 63664).
