Mary McGinnis Obituary

Mary L. McGinnis, nee Winters, of Steelville, MO, was born on Friday, March 25, 1949 in Vanduser, MO to Benson L. Winters and Alta Lillian Johnson Winters.  She passed away on Friday, June 25, 2021 at Cuba Manor in Cuba, MO at the age of 72 years and 3 months.

Mary graduated from McCluer High School in Florissant, MO and then went to Missouri Baptist University for nursing where she obtained her license to be a LPN.  She married David Hanson McGinnis on December 4, 1967 in Florrisant, MO and to this union 3 children were born.  They lived in Pevely, MO for a short time, while there she worked with infants at St. Anthony’s Hospital and in her free time loved to go bowling.  Mary was a compassionate, nurturing person and after moving to Steelville, MO put her degree to use as she also worked at Gibbs Care Center, then the Missouri Veteran’s Home in St. James, MO where she retired after 25 years.  She then went back to work for Pyramid Health Care out of Rolla, MO.  During her time working for the MO Veteran’s Home, she made homemade wicker baskets for 20 years called, “Whittenburg Valley Baskets”.  She went to a lot of craft shows.  Mary accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at an early age and was a member of First Baptist Church in Steelville, MO.  She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.  She looked forward to keeping the grandkids during the summertime and taking them swimming and on miscellaneous trips.  She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, caregiver and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents Benson and Alta Winters; brother Jonathon “Jack” Winters and sister Sandy Ripple.

She is survived by her children Dave (Paula) McGinnis of Steelville, MO, Albert (Melissa) McGinnis of Cuba, MO and Amy (Chris) Hofmann of Foley, MO; sister Lynn Winters of Farmington, MO; grandchildren Andrew (Sara) McGinnis and Austin McGinnis both of Steelville, MO, Amity McGinnis of Gerald, MO, Addison McGinnis and Asher McGinnis both of Cuba, MO, Cain Warren, Tyler Hofmann, Alyssa Hofmann and Austin Hofmann all of Troy, MO; great grandchildren Nellie and Emilia McGinnis both of Steelville, MO and Haysley Tarkington of Troy, MO; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Visitation was from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville, MO.  Memorial Service  immediately followed at 7:00 PM with Pastor Rick Haggett officiating.  The family chose cremation as her final disposition.
