Avis “Maxine” Halbert Barber of Steelville, MO was born on Sunday, August 18, 1935 in Steelville, MO to Wilbur “Chub” Clay and Ida Frances Downing Clay. She passed away at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan, MO on Sunday, May 23, 2021 at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 5 days.
Maxine was a lifelong resident of Crawford County. She had attended grade school at Liberty School and graduated from Steelville High School in the Class of 1951. She married Eddie Gene Halbert on February 18, 1955 in Steelville, MO and to this union three children were born. Maxine was a housewife while she raised her children, then worked as a teacher’s aide and bus driver for the school for many years and then was a secretary at the church. Years after Gene passed away, she married Vernon Eugene Barber on August 18, 2007 at Faith Chapel in Cuba, MO. Maxine accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at an early age and attended NHIM church in Steelville, MO. She loved horseback riding; she and Gene were members of the Ozark Trailblazers and helped get it started. Maxine enjoyed going to the creek, fishing and swimming. She loved to paint. She liked to play the banjo and played a little on the guitar and piano. She enjoyed going to church, but most of all Maxine loved her children and grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents Wilbur “Chub” and Ida Clay; first husband Gene Halbert; second husband Vernon Barber; parents-in-law Earl and Ada Halbert; brothers Charlie Clay and Cecil Clay; brother-in-law Rusty Presley; daughter-in-law Nancy Sue Halbert and son-in-law John Weber.
Maxine is survived by her children Lonnie (Kristina) Halbert and John (Janice) Halbert both of Steelville, MO and Charlene (Kevin) Jones of Edgar Springs, MO; siblings Shirley Presley of Payson, AZ and Chuck (Elsie) Clay of Havre de Grace, MD; sisters-in-law Joyce (Jim) Cottrell of Cherryville, MO and Karen Bueneman of Steelville, MO; brother-in-law Russell (Judy) Halbert of Steelville, MO; grandchildren Justin Halbert of St. Louis, MO, Carl (Brandi) Weber of Rolla, MO, Cody Weber of Warrensburg, MO, Steffany (Pete) Stringer and Austin Halbert both of Steelville, MO; 13 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation was from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM on Friday, May 28, 2021 at Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville, MO. Funeral Service immediately followed at 1:00 PM with Pastor Angel Monda officiating. Burial was at the Halbert Family Cemetery, Steelville, MO. Memorials were suggested to Equipping the Harvest Ministries c/o The Franklin's (PO Box 266 Potosi, MO 63664).
